A tummy tuck, medically known as an abdominoplasty, is an innovative procedure designed to remove excess fat and skin in the abdominal region and tighten abdominal muscles. By restoring the appearance of the abdomen, abdominoplasty yields beautiful results for healthy women and men who are unable to lose stubborn belly fat or saggy abdominal skin.

As a body contouring procedure, tummy tucks are not intended as a weight loss substitute. Often, tummy tucks are an ideal solution for patients who are at or near their ideal body weight but uncomfortable with the appearance of their abdomen.

Following a Philadelphia tummy tuck, patients experience:

The mini tummy tuck requires smaller incisions, leaves a smaller scar, and involves a shorter recovery time than its traditional counterpart.

Good candidates for tummy tuck surgery are those who are generally healthy, including eating a healthy diet and following a consistent exercise regimen. However, these candidates may still be uncomfortable with stubborn belly fat, saggy or hanging skin on the abdomen, or have separated abdominal muscles.

A tummy tuck surgery is not intended as a weight loss procedure but rather improves body contours and definition after losing weight through lifestyle changes. Dr. Chapin recommends that you are close to your ideal, stable weight with a BMI of 30 or less.

Generally, Dr. Chapin suggests ideal candidates for tummy tuck surgery should:

• Be in good overall health
• Not smoke, or be willing to quit prior to surgery
• Be finished having children
• Be at a healthy, stable weight for 6 months
• Have realistic expectations
• Understand the surgical risks

Patients who are not good candidates are those who:

• Plan to lose a significant amount of weight
• Have a BMI higher than 30
• Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant in the future
• Have a severe or chronic medical condition
• Have significant scar tissue from previous abdominal surgeries

Typically, most abdominoplasty patients notice dramatic results immediately after surgery. However, you may also experience swelling that temporarily obscures your results. It may take 3 to 6 months for residual swelling to subside, revealing your full aesthetic results. For a mini tummy tuck, complete results are noticeable after one to three months. You will experience long-lasting results from your tummy tuck by maintaining your healthy diet and exercise regimen.

Tummy tuck costs can vary from patient to patient, given the fact that there full and mini tummy tuck options. During your consultation, Dr. Chapin will assess the scope of your individualized procedure, establish surgical details, and determine your abdominoplasty cost. At that time, Dr. Chapin can direct you to our patient coordinator for information regarding tummy tuck financing.

As a tummy tuck is an outpatient procedure, you will need someone to drive you to and from the surgical facility and stay with you for at least the first 24 hours. In some cases, Dr. Chapin may recommend you stay the night at a hospital to monitor your progress.

Immediately following your tummy tuck, the incision sites will be dressed, and a compression garment will be placed around your midsection to minimize swelling and provide support as you heal. You will need to wear your compression garment at least 3 weeks for a full tummy tuck and at least 2 to 3 weeks for a mini tummy tuck.

Typically, patients take 2 weeks off from work following an abdominoplasty. During this time, it’s important to get plenty of rest. For at least 4 weeks, you should avoid strenuous exercises, but Dr. Chapin recommends short, light walks to promote blood circulation and healing. Dr. Chapin will monitor your progress and let you know when to resume all daily activities, including exercise.
